This is a folk ballad with uncertain authorship. As an old folk song it is somewhat similar to a song from the 1500's in England called "The Unfortunate Rake". It was known to miners in 1905 and was published in 1925. The lyrics have changed over the years. the Animals had a big hit with this song in 1964.
